Mônica Bergamo: Luxury hotel in São Paulo has fun with mortadella in a World Cup game: ‘Is it a PT party?’

by

Before Brazil’s defeat by Croatia in the Qatar Cup, the atmosphere was lively in the pool area of the luxury Tivoli Mofarrej hotel, in the Paulista Avenue area, in São Paulo. Men with the selection shirt and women in high heels, made up and dressed in blouses or sequined pants crowded the space.

Tickets to participate in the party, organized by the hotel in partnership with the Mak agency, were sold the day before for BRL 500 for women, and BRL 650 for men, in their fourth batch. They entitled to “premium open bar” and finger foods, as advertised on the event’s website.

If the drink was plentiful —whiskey, wine, gin, vodka, soft drinks and others—, the food offered generated complaints and jokes. In a tent, mortadella and cups were served. “Is it a PT party now?”, asked one of the regulars, who wore the yellow shirt of the Brazilian team. “And he doesn’t even have bread,” replied the woman who accompanied him. The two ate a few slices of mortadella.

During the intervals of the game, breads with crazy meat and cold meats were also served. But once they were placed on the table, they ran out quickly. Embarrassed, the employees could not say when the bread would be replenished.

What was really successful was the açaí, offered at will. Staying at the hotel, actor Wagner Santisteban stood in line to guarantee a small bowl of fruit. “I came to enjoy a little, but the game is not easy. I’m tense”, he told the column at halftime.

Guest of the event and in the same box as the actor, actress Cris Vianna was also concerned about the performance of the Brazilian team. “This game is tight,” she said. “After so much agony, I wanted the selection to win, because it moves the market, people are happier.”

When, finally, Neymar’s goal came out, already in overtime, those present celebrated with relief. One group began chanting the lines “I am Brazilian with great pride, with much love”.

Minutes later, however, Croatia’s goal discouraged the public. And the defeat on penalties threw a bucket of cold water. Some people preferred to leave the event. For others, despite the Brazilian elimination, the party was just beginning.
