Known as the king of gas, businessman Carlos Suarez, is working for Bahian deputy Elmar Nascimento (União Brasil) to be Minister of Mines and Energy in the Lula government, according to advisors from the transition team.
Suarez was one of the founding partners of the construction company OAS. He became known as the “S” in the company’s acronym. Decades after he left, the company was the target of the Lava Jato operation.
Elmar was the author of some of the tortoises in the Eletrobras privatization project. One of them benefited Suarez by imposing on the former state-owned company the obligation to hire 8 GW (gigawatt) of thermoelectric plants.
Suarez owns seven gas distributors (which supply thermoelectric plants) in places where the input is non-existent.
To take gas to these regions, the businessman is trying to get the Brasduto, a network of gas pipelines to interconnect the country, in Congress.
The project would cost around R$90 billion. The measure is criticized by the electricity sector due to the lack of demand in the regions and the high cost, which would be transferred to other energy consumers.

When contacted, the deputy and Suarez did not respond.
