Staikouras for a meeting with bankers: “For 2 hours we exchanged… coins. A step has been taken”

At the beginning of 2023 the next meeting of the finance minister with the bankers – Negative on the extension of the 600 euro allowance – 25 million euros will be distributed to the officers of the Armed Forces

Finance Minister Christos Staikouras spoke of a first step towards the agreement, which will offer breathing space to the borrowers, speaking to the parliamentary co-conspirators after the meeting he had with the bankers.

The Minister of Finance said that the meeting was not easy, emphasizing that “for two hours we were arguing”. Nevertheless, after the difficult negotiations with the managements of the four systemic banks on deposits, loans and commissions, it seems that a common ground has been found, which may yield an agreement.

The main topic of the discussion was the presentation of a comprehensive proposal by the bankers for the vulnerable informed borrowers, whose installment has increased due to successive interest rate hikes by the ECB.

“”A step was taken in the right direction but we still have more,” said Mr. Staikouras characteristically and added: “We are saving some, it is a solution for several borrowers, about 30,000.”

He also noted that the next meeting of the two sides will probably take place at the beginning of next year.

Referring to the question of the allowance of 600 euros and whether it might be extended to other professional groups, Mr. Staikouras was categorically negative. However, he pointed out that the officers of the Armed Forces will share an amount in the order of 25 million euros, which will, however, be given away.
