59 Ukrainian soldiers released – Unknown number of Russians
An American citizen was released today as part of the exchange of dozens of Ukrainian-Russian prisoners, according to the head of Ukraine’s presidential administration.
Andriy Yermak wrote on the Telegram messaging app that Swedi Murekezi was “helping our people” before he ended up in Russia.
He said 64 Ukrainian soldiers and the bodies of four fallen soldiers were handed over by Russia, without saying where the prisoner exchange took place or how many Russian soldiers were handed over.
According to the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, 59 Ukrainian servicemen were released, including 4 officers and 5 fighters of the Territorial Defense Forces, Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform reports, adding that at least 23 of them are wounded, while the condition of some is critical.
The oldest of the fighters is 57 and the youngest is 19.
The 35-year-old Murekezi, as the British newspaper Guardian wrote, was released at the end of October after being held in various locations and living without documents in the city of Donetsk, which is controlled by Russian-backed forces.
Russian news agency TASS reported in August that Mukherjee had been charged in Donetsk with “inciting national hatred” for taking part in protests against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Mukerezi’s lawyer said his client had become involved in these protests “accidentally”.
