by

Fines of €50,787 on 5 supermarket chains for selling 13 “household basket” products with a higher gross profit margin than allowed

Fines of a total amount of 50,787 euros are imposed by the decision of the Minister of Development & Investments, Mr. Adonis Georgiadis, on 5 supermarket chains because they sold 13 products included in the “household basket”, the first week of implementation (3-9/11/2022).

At the same time, by another decision of the Minister, Mr. Adonis Georgiadis, fines of a total amount of 40,000 are imposed on 8 gas stations in Northern Greece as in controls of the Inter-Service Market Control Unit (DIMEA) it was found that they violated the written provisions on unfair profiteering (Law 4818 /2021) in gasoline and diesel.

In detail, the following fines are imposed per supermarket for sales in the first week of application of the “household basket” (3-9/12/2022) with a gross profit margin that exceeded the corresponding small profit margin before 1/9/2021 of the following products:

-22,757 euros for 5 products, namely whole wheat toast bread, whole condensed milk, extra virgin olive oil, medium beans, toilet paper,

-13,030 euros for 3 products, namely rice, feta cheese and toothpaste,

-5,000 euros for 3 products, namely extra virgin olive oil, sunflower oil and baby wipes,

-5,000 euros for 1 product and specific peas,

– and 5,000 euros for 1 product, namely Greek coffee.

It should be noted that as the fine per case is less than 50,000 euros, it is not allowed, based on European regulations and national legislation, to publish the supermarket brands.
