The new appearance of banknotes with his image King Charles the Bank of England revealed.
The portrait of King Charles, replacing that of Elizabeth, will be the only change to the existing £5, £10, £20 and £50 designs and the new notes will go into circulation from mid-2024.
The new notes will feature the king’s portrait on the obverse and security watermark.
Existing notes will continue to be accepted in shops after the new notes go into circulation.
Queen Elizabeth was the first and only monarch to appear on Bank of England banknotes in circulation, beginning in 1960. Banknotes issued by banks in Scotland and Northern Ireland do not feature the monarch.
There are currently around 4.5 billion Bank of England notes in circulation, worth around £80 billion.
Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey said he was “proud” of the new plan, calling it a “significant moment”. However, there are not a few who talk about the “beautification” of the king, in the most… masculine way. “It has something of Dominic West” said some Britons on social media referring to the actor who plays Charles in The Crown. Some others everywhere are talking about exaggerations.
It is noted that new coins with the portrait of the king have already been put into circulation in the UK. The new coins, worth 50 pence, (almost 58 cents of the euro) made their appearance in the country’s post offices,
Coins bearing the Queen’s image will still be accepted in shops, as will banknotes.
