According to the Minister of Rural Development and Food, Giorgos Georgantas, for the first time compensations are paid by ELGA within the year in which the damages were caused.

Compensations of 48.3 million euros will be paid tomorrow, Friday, December 23, to 22,095 producers, for crop and livestock losses in 2022.

According to the Minister of Rural Development and Food, Giorgos Georgantas, for the first time compensations are paid by ELGA within the year in which the damages were caused.

“With a systematic effort, we achieved in the three years 2020-2022 that the compensations are paid within the same year and the first months of the following year” he noted and pointed out that in the three years 2020-2022 862 million euros were paid for compensations of plant and animal capital, out of of which 783 million euros according to the ELGA Insurance Regulation and 89 million euros according to the State Financial Aid Regulation (KOE).

€2.6 million is also being paid to producers in Western Macedonia, whose crops were affected at the pre-flowering stage by the 2021 Spring frost.

“We assure our producers that those who have not been compensated until now will also be compensated for the damage of the pre-flowering stage of the Spring 2021 frost to their crops, for which ELGA has drawn up relevant findings,” said the minister.

€13.5m is also being paid to non-occupational farmers whose tree crops – mainly olive crops – were destroyed in the 2021 fires.

Mr. Georgantas underlined that “for more than a year, the government, the Ministry of Rural Development and Food and the administration of ELGA, we worked hard and succeeded in forming a new institutional framework to pay significant compensations to the beneficiaries.

It is worth noting that the previous statutory framework for compensation in the event of fires did not cover non-main occupation farmers.

Also, compensations in cases of loss of plant capital due to fires until 2020 were extremely reduced, even for farmers by main occupation, a total of 21 euros per olive tree and were paid through the State Financial Support, with lengthy bureaucratic procedures, which lasted up to four (4 years.

The government with social sensitivity manifests its practical support to the citizens when they are in need and are tested”, emphasized the Minister of Rural Development and Food.
