Datafolha: Pessimism grows about the Brazilian economy in the coming months

by

The percentage of Brazilians who think that the country’s economic situation will improve in the coming months fell in December, after reaching the highest level in the historical series of the Datafolha survey in October. Since June, the numbers have only been increasing, a trend interrupted in this first survey carried out after the second round of elections.

The data show relevant differences in the evaluations of the interviewees according to their political choices. Pessimism about the future has also increased, especially among voters of the current president.

The country’s economic situation has improved in recent months for 26% of respondents, according to the survey carried out last Monday (19) and Tuesday (20). It was 34% on the eve of the second round of elections, when the number was at a record level in the historical series started in 2015 for this issue.

There are 38% who saw the country’s situation worsen in recent months, compared to 42% in October, an oscillation within the margin of error of two percentage points. For 35%, it was the same. It was 23% in October.

Datafolha also asked about expectations for the economy. 49% of respondents estimate that the country’s economic situation will improve in the coming months, compared to 62% in the October survey — a still high level for the series that, in this case, begins in 2019.

There are 20% who expect it to get worse. It was 13% in October. For 28%, the economy will remain as it is, compared to 16% in the previous survey.

Datafolha points out that the expectation for the future of the economy is practically at the same level as the first year of the current government, both in terms of optimism and pessimism of respondents.

In the electoral frame, the current situation of the economy is seen as positive by 41% of voters for Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and by 11% of those who voted for Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). The future is seen as positive by 79% of PT voters and by 19% of those who voted for the current president.

personal situation

Regarding the interviewee’s own economic situation, 31% see an improvement in recent months, compared to 34% in the previous survey. It is said to have worsened by 31%, down from 33% two months earlier. For 38%, it stayed as it was. It was 33% in October.

Regarding the future, the expectation of improvement in their personal situation in the coming months fell from 70% to 59% in relation to the previous survey. The worsening rate went from 5% to 11%.

Here, too, there are differences regarding the political option. Among Bolsonaro voters, 45% have seen improvement in recent months, 38% do not expect changes and 37% are optimistic about their economic situation in the coming months.

Among those who voted for Lula, only 17% have seen improvement in recent months, and 79% are optimistic about the future.

The expectation of improvement for the Brazilian economy is greater among unemployed people (67%) and housewives (57%). It is also higher among the poorest (57%) than among the richest (18%), among Catholics (53%) than among evangelicals (41%) and residents of the Northeast (64%) than the South (34 %).

Among entrepreneurs, 51% say that their economic situation has improved in recent months and 52% are optimistic about the future. The negative evaluation is 17% in both questions. Regarding the future of the country, 37% say that the economy will remain as it is, 31% expect improvement and 30%, it will get worse.
