by

Roofs and small plots of land in the state of São Paulo this month surpassed the 1 gigawatt mark in solar energy generation, according to Absolar (Brazilian Association of Photovoltaic Solar Energy).

The organization claims that there are more than 111,000 systems installed in homes, businesses, industries, rural properties and public buildings in nearly 640 cities. In all, 128 thousand people from São Paulo consume energy generated by the technology.

São Paulo is only behind Minas Gerais in installed power, with almost 13% of the national total. In third place appears Rio Grande do Sul. In the country, there are 517,000 points of generation of own solar energy in homes, according to the entity.

The technology has already attracted more than R$ 5.1 billion in investments since 2012 in the state and has reduced the emission of 1.2 million tons of carbon dioxide, says Absolar.
