President of IBGE is exonerated, and director takes over on an interim basis

Economist Eduardo Rios Neto was exonerated from the position of president of the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), according to an ordinance published in an edition of the Official Gazette on Monday (2).

This Tuesday (3), the institute stated that Rios Neto will be replaced by the current director of research at the IBGE, Cimar Azeredo, until a new president is appointed.

Signed by the chief minister of the Civil House of the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) government, Rui Costa, the ordinance also confirms the dismissal of Marise Maria Ferreira from the position of director of the executive director of the IBGE and the dismissal of Rose Mary Rodrigues, deputy director.

The changes occur at a time when the IBGE is trying to finalize the collection of the 2022 Demographic Census. Started in August, the census operation was scheduled to end in October.

However, the institute alleges that it encountered difficulties in hiring and keeping census takers in the field. With that, the estimate for the end of the collection was updated to January of this year.

That is, the work will take at least six months, double the initial period (three months).

Rios Neto assumed the presidency of the IBGE in April 2021, after Susana Cordeiro Guerra, the first president of the institute in the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government, resigned.

Guerra’s departure came after the announcement of an almost 90% cut in the Census budget, which was initially scheduled for 2020.
