With Lula’s endorsement, Rui Costa denies reviewing the pension reform and disauthorizes Lupi

The Minister of the Civil House, Rui Costa (PT), denied, this Wednesday (4), that the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) is preparing proposals for reviewing reforms, disavowing the Minister of Social Security, Carlos Lupi (PDT).

Rui Costa said that any proposal will necessarily pass through the Civil House before its analysis and that this was something discussed with Lula himself. He also stated that any proposal will only be forwarded after approval by the president.

“There is no proposal being analyzed and thought about at this moment for reviewing the reform, be it social security or otherwise. At this moment nothing is being elaborated”, he affirmed.

On Tuesday (3), Lupi said he wants to create a commission with representatives of employers’ unions, employees, retirees and the government to discuss what he called the “anti-reform” of Social Security, approved in the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

Lupi’s speeches on Tuesday were poorly received by the financial market. After the speech, the Stock Exchange deepened the fall and ended the day with a 2% retreat, at 104,165 points. The dollar rose 1.77% this Tuesday, quoted at R$5.4520 on sale, the highest value since the end of July.

“Just to reassure you. I know that everyone has the right to an opinion, but at this moment there is no proposal for a pension reform or anything similar”, said Rui Costa after participating in the inauguration ceremony of Geraldo Alckmin at the Ministry of Development, Industry and Business.

Rui Costa also stated that President Lula scheduled his government’s first ministerial meeting to take place next Friday (6). “To even organize and reaffirm, he [Lula] just told me, any proposal will only be forwarded, of course, after the approval of the President of the Republic”, he said.
