Georgiadis teleconference with the supermarkets for the household basket

“The first “Household Basket” for 2023 managed to keep prices steady – We expect many new good prices in the coming days”

Market measures will be maintained as long as the exogenous precision crisis lasts, the political leadership of the Ministry of Development and Investments said today.

Minister Adonis Georgiadis, Deputy Minister Nikos Papathanasis and Secretary General of Trade and Consumer Protection Sotiris Anagnostopoulos visited today two stores of the “Bazaar” and “Galaxy” supermarket chains, as last week they recorded the biggest reduction in prices of “Household Basket” products.

As Mr. Georgiadis stated, “…the first “Household Basket” for 2023 is of great interest, as although the time has changed and the announced and inevitable increases due to inflation have started, and we have increases in several products outside of the “Basket”, the “Basket” managed to keep prices absolutely flat for a 10th week with a slight downward trend. The general trend of the “Basket” therefore remains absolutely positive for the consumer”.

“We consider this help to our fellow citizens to be very important, as with this initiative we give them the opportunity not to suffer the consequences of inflation if and as long as they choose to shop from the “Basket”.

I want to thank all the supermarket chains that have backed this effort. Yesterday we had a conference call with the food industry and discussed how we can strengthen the presence of branded products in the “Basket”. Today we will have a corresponding video conference with the supermarkets and I think we will have many new good prices in the coming days” added the Minister of Development and Investments.

For his part, N. Papathanasis also pointed out that “we are in the 10th week of the implementation of the “Basket” and we find, once again, that the prices of most products have remained at the same or even lower levels” and continued:

“The shopping card will be added very soon to the “Basket”, which, as the statistics prove, works. Combined, the two measures can save a family of four more than 130 euros per month.

And that’s not all. Our government has already announced a series of actions, such as increases in pensions, the abolition of the solidarity levy, etc., which come to support the disposable income of our fellow citizens.

We will continue to closely monitor the market and maintain measures for the duration of this exogenous precision crisis in order to protect our most economically vulnerable fellow citizens from price increases.”
