99, a company known for offering car trips via app, joins the list of startups that are reducing the number of employees in Brazil. A list circulating on Linkedin shows at least 77 layoffs, including professionals from areas such as CX (customer experience), human resources, security, social networks and data analysis.

The company does not confirm how many people have been laid off, but said the move is part of a restructuring process to increase the focus on financial and delivery services.

In recent days, staff cuts have been announced at several tech companies, including Loft, Amazon, Twitter and Tiktok.

“To continue democratizing our services, including digital payment solutions with 99Pay, we performed extensive assessments of our resource allocation across all lines of business. As a result of this and other operational factors, we made the difficult decision to conduct an internal reorganization” , informed the company, in a note.

“Sadly, we had to say goodbye to a group of employees this week, to whom we are extremely grateful for their contributions,” said 99.

“Knowing that the macroeconomic situation also directly impacts our users and partners, we reaffirm our commitment to continue offering more accessible services to more than 20 million active users, generating value for the entire ecosystem we support”, continues the statement.

99 was created in Brazil in 2012, initially as an app to call taxis. Later, it included other services, such as cars driven by registered drivers, deliveries of objects and food, and financial services, such as loans.

In 2018, the startup was acquired by the Chinese group Didi, one of the main names in the app passenger transport sector in China.

Although it is making cuts, 99 announced this Tuesday the launch of the 99Entrega Moto Corporativo service, aimed at companies of all sizes, which will start operating until the end of January. The idea is to transport products in the so-called last mile, such as the distance between distribution centers and customers’ homes.

“Overall demand for our two-wheeler services, 99Moto and 99Entrega Moto, has grown by more than 50% in the last three months compared to the third quarter of 2022. Both are now available in more than 3,000 cities,” the company said in a statement. note.

Despite the commitment to services with motorcycles, 99 announced to partners last week that it will end its delivery service with couriers that partner the app, as reported in the column Panel SA

According to the company, in January 2022 the transition of 99Food to an operation focused on marketplace, without offering delivery service, began.
