Regional airports have achieved full recovery after the pandemic

Passenger traffic took off in 2022 at the 14 Regional Airports managed by Fraport Greece.

The regional airports achieved full recovery after the pandemic, since according to the data released by the company, passenger traffic in 2022 amounted to 31.19 million at all 14 airports. In relation to 2019, which was the absolute record year, Fraport Greece recorded an increase in passenger traffic by 3.4% compared to 2019, when 30.16 million passengers visited its airports.

International traffic in 2022 was 24.92 million, compared to 23.25 million in 2019, an increase of 7.2%. On the contrary, domestic traffic was -9.2% compared to 2019 and amounted to 6.3 million passengers. In terms of flights, there was a 4.4% increase compared to 2019, 256,285 flights in total, with international flights up 10.3% and domestic flights down 7.2% compared to the previous pandemic levels.

By airport, 10 of the 14 airports saw an increase in passenger traffic compared to 2019, with Santorini up 19.3%, Corfu 14.4%, Mykonos 10.9%, Corfu 14.4 %, Aktio 23.5%, Chania 10.3%, Kefalonia 5.6%, Zakynthos 5.1%, Kos 4.3%, Rhodes 5.7% and Skiathos 14.6 %. On the contrary, a decrease was noted in Thessaloniki with 14.2%, Mytilini with 11.6%, Samos with 5.6% and Kavala with 22.3%.

Traffic was also high in December, with regional airports receiving 669,103 passengers compared to 697,194 in 2019, just 4% less. Even though international passengers were observed to decrease by -13.4% in the same month, the increased domestic traffic managed to significantly reduce the difference. To be precise, based on Fraport data in December 2022 domestic traffic amounted to 417,361, 2.7% more than in 2019, where 406,366 passengers were transported.
