As a world triathlon champion, Leslie Patterson he knows more than anyone what endurance means. “The dedication that comes from playing sport at this level, the obsession you need. Ian Stockel and Leslie Patterson approached the Remarque Foundation to acquire the rights to the book. But that was not the only obstacle.
“Everything in the film industry is about timing and 16 years ago, World War I was not in the spirit of the times. It was not a popular war to cover on film and certainly not on the German side,” he explained.
Their original script was in English, as they felt it was the only way to finance a war film. Gradually, however, the cinematic landscape changed.
“Streaming platforms have appeared. Films like the Korean Oscar-winning Parasite helped. The movie “1917” was released, he said.
After meeting director Edward Berger, they presented the film in 2020 as a German-language project and were delighted when Netflix picked it up. The film was shot in the Czech Republic in 2021 with Daniel Bruhl and Felix Kammerer in the cast.
