Panel SA: Brazilian pharmacist advances in research that takes coronaviruses on space travel

by

This Wednesday morning (22) landed on the ISS (International Space Station) a SpaceX capsule carrying a Brazilian experiment on the coronavirus.

The research, developed by the CNPEM (National Center for Research in Energy and Materials), is financed by pharmaceutical company Cimed, which hired the Brazilian space logistics company Airvantis to make the project viable.

The objective of the experiment carried out into space is to crystallize a protein from Sars-Cov-2. Back on Earth, this should help to better visualize this virus structure.

“We consider the future of the national pharmaceutical industry in space very promising, which works as a large laboratory, since studies in orbit help us to understand the functioning of our organism here on Earth”, says JoĂ£o Adibe Marques, president of Cimed.

Airvantis also has three new space missions scheduled for the first half of 2022, along with Cimed, and hopes to carry out at least two more by the end of 2022.

“The number of launches may be higher next year, as negotiations are underway. Space research has entered the innovation agenda of Brazilian companies. Having a specialized logistics player and the arrival of new technologies makes this type of investment more accessible”, says Lucas Fonseca, CEO of Airvantis.
