Panel SA: Americanas scandal will be discussed in Congress, says senator

by

Senator Otto Alencar (PSD-BA) wants to take the discussion on the Americanas accounting scandal to the CAE (Economic Affairs Commission) of the Senate. He says that shareholders, partners and PwC, responsible for consulting the retailer, need to be summoned to explain the case to the senators.

“It is necessary to find out who the creditors are, whether public banks such as BNDES, Banco do Brasil, Caixa Econômica, Banco do Nordeste or any other are on that list. We will have to evaluate all these things”, said the congressman.

Alencar is the current president of the CAE, but should not remain in charge of the commission after the end of the parliamentary recess. Asked about the intention of the graduated senator Sergio Moro (União Brasil-PR), to debate the subject in a special collegiate, Alencar affirms that there is no need to remove this attribution from the CAE.

Moro’s idea is to assemble, in this special commission, a bill that strengthens the CVM (Securities and Exchange Commission) and shields the financial market from crises such as that of Americanas.

“On the return of the recess, the commission should discuss whether it will be a hearing or a public hearing. It is a problem that we have to debate, not least because this crisis should lead to mass layoffs. Americanas is a company with many employees and I believe that this will be a inevitable path,” said Alencar.
