Panel SA: Mining companies demand government measures against illegal mining in Yanomami territory

by

The Ibram (Brazilian Mining Institute) asked the Federal Revenue Service, this Monday (23), that the issuance of invoices in operations involving gold from mining should be done electronically. The measure is seen as a way to reduce illegal logging in the Amazon, especially in indigenous areas such as that of the Yanomami peoples.

According to the entity, which brings together companies such as Vale, Samarco and Mineração Usiminas, currently, invoices with information on gold extraction are still recorded on paper, many of them handwritten, which would make inspection and tracking of illegal production difficult.

The request was delivered by the CEO of Ibram, Raul Jungmann, to the special secretary of the Federal Revenue, Robinson Barreirinhas, in Brasília. According to Ibram, Barreirinhas undertook to speed up the matter internally and take it to Minister Fernando Haddad (Finance).

On Friday (20), the Ministry of Health declared a state of emergency in the Yanomami lands to combat the lack of health care that affects the indigenous people. In addition to the contamination of rivers caused by illegal mining, the activity’s excavations are identified as one of the causes of the proliferation of malaria in the region.
