For its ability to write complex texts that look like they were made by humans, ChatGPT was banned from schools and universities and motivated debates about changes in the teaching method.

To help identify plagiarism and fraud, OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT, launched this Tuesday (31) a tool that aims to identify whether a given text was written by AI (artificial intelligence) or not.

Understand: on the platform’s website (click here to access), OpenAI states that “the classifier is a tool to stimulate discussions about AI literacy”.

  • It states that the results – which can be “very unlikely”, “unlikely”, “uncertain”, “possibly” or “probably” on AI-generated text – should not be the only evidence to guarantee that a piece of content was generated by an AI. robot or not.

The tool itself exposes its weaknesses:

  • It requires a minimum of 1000 characters, which is approximately 150-250 words.
  • The classifier is not always accurate, and can mislabel AI-generated and human-written text. There is even an example of an error: when the test is done with the second paragraph of the book “Don Quixote”, it reports as being done by AI.
  • AI generated text can be easily edited to avoid classifier.
  • The classifier is likely to make mistakes on text written by children and text that is not in English, because it was trained primarily on English content written by adults.

Graduate: The academic community’s concern grew after ChatGPT was tested and passed – but not with the highest score – on an MBA at Wharton and on exams to practice as a doctor and lawyer in the US.

In an interview with Folha, neuroscientist Álvaro Machado Dias, a columnist for the newspaper, said that technology can bring negative consequences, but the balance is positive. Bureaucratic professions and teaching models based on “by heart” may have their days numbered.

In January, the stock market rose and the dollar fell

In the first month of the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) government, the stock exchange and the exchange rate, the main indicators of the national financial market, closed in the positive despite the turbulent start.

  • The highlight among the investments was bitcoin, which accumulated a high of 33.4% in January after a very negative 2022.

In numbers: after rising 1.26% this Tuesday, the Ibovespa accumulated gains of 3.6% in the first month of 2023, at 113,691 points, while the dollar retreated 0.75% in the day and ended January with a fall of 3.82% against the real, the BRL 5.07.

Which explains: after a first week marked by statements by members of the government that generated risk aversion in investors and took the dollar to R$ 5.45, the final half of the month boosted local assets from positive news from China.

  • The reopening of activities by Brazil’s main trading partner boosted commodity prices and benefited Brazilian export companies. Signs of a reduction in the pace of monetary tightening in the US also took away strength from the dollar.
  • Around here, statements by the economic team anticipating the announcement of the new fiscal rule for April and commitment to public accounts helped to calm investors worried about the fiscal risk.

After the tumble, the lead: Bitcoin’s surge comes after a turbulent 2022, when the cryptocurrency fell 66%, affected by high interest rates in the US and the bankruptcy of FTX, which hit the sector as a whole.

  • In January, cryptos also benefited from the expectation of a lower interest rate hike, which benefits investments considered riskier.

layoffs in Americanas

The cuts of workers involved in Americanas operations began this Tuesday (31).

  • At first, outsourced workers were laid off after the retailer terminated contracts with service providers in Rio de Janeiro.
  • In Porto Alegre, one-off layoffs affect employees who have been with the company for less than a year, and the next step should be São Paulo, where the largest number of retailer stores and distribution centers are concentrated.
  • Sought, Americanas denied that there are layoffs. He said that “he just interrupted some contracts with companies providing outsourced services”.

Layoffs outside RJ: for having filed the judicial recovery process in a hurry to avoid blocking its accounts, Americanas reversed the order that is commonly adopted by companies in this situation, as shown by the Sheet.

  • It is usual for companies that are in bad shape to fire their employees before entering RJ, so that labor liabilities are included in the negotiation plan with creditors.
  • The obligations that are owed by the companies after the RJ request must be paid normally.

In numbers: are about 45 thousand direct employees and approx. 60 thousand retailers.

  • The cuts, which were already expected due to the company’s need to reduce costs, should be concentrated in the operations of physical stores – there are 1800 points in the sum of the traditional and Express formats, plus 79 stores of the Natural da Terra fruit and vegetable chain.

Solar farms led race for subsidy

After the deadline for registration of solar energy projects entitled to full subsidy, the 486.6 thousand distributed generation projects registered from October to January 7 add up to 32,298 MW (megawatts) of installed power.

Understand: Distributed generation projects installed by January 7 will be exempt until 2045 for the use of wire in the distribution network.

  • The exempt amount ends up being a subsidy from all consumers to generators, with a total cost of BRL 488.3 billion –considering this batch and previous projects– which will be charged on the electricity bill by 2045, according to Abradee (association of distributors).

Distributed generation is divided in two forms of solar energy generation:

  • Microgeneration: are solar panels installed on the roofs of houses, with an installed power of less than or equal to 75 kW.

In numbers: in the wave of last-minute projects, from October to January 7, were registered 25,231 MW of installed power of minigeneration, accounting for a cost of BRL 209.4 billion from these farms to consumers.
