As pizza lovers in the United States prepare to celebrate National Pizza Day on February 9, consumers in the EU will have to reach deeper into their pockets to enjoy a slice of Italy’s most famous fast food.
However, the rate of pizza inflation varies widely across the EU, with Hungary topping the Eurostat chart with a 46% annual price increase, followed by Lithuania and Bulgaria at 39% and 37% respectively.
The smallest increases in the price of pizza and quiche, collected in the new Eurostat index, were recorded in Luxembourg (+7%), Italy (+10%) and France (+13%).
Headline inflation in the eurozone rose in December by 9.2% year-on-year, with a 13.8% increase in food, drink and tobacco products, Eurostat said last month.
Eurostat categorizes “pizza and quiche products” into the varieties sold in shops, based on flour and made with meat, fish, seafood, cheese, vegetables or fruit”.
