Airbnb has the best quarter in its history

Airbnb recorded revenue in the third quarter well above the same period in 2019, before the pandemic, a sign that the hosting reservation platform is more active than before the coronavirus.

Between June and September, the northernmost summer and the company’s most active season, it had sales of US$ 2.23 billion (R$ 12.5 billion, at the current price), above the market’s expectations.

Like many companies, Airbnb compares its financial results with 2019, as 2020 was an atypical year for tourism.

Sales are, therefore, 36% higher than in the third quarter of 2019. Net income for the quarter increased 280% compared to the same period in 2019, to US$ 834 million (R$ 4.7 billion).

“The travel recovery started earlier this year and increased in the third quarter, [gerando] the best quarter” for Airbnb in its history, the company said in a letter to investors.

“The world is undergoing a revolution in our ways of living and working,” added the company.

Airbnb noted that there are new trends, such as long stays (20% of bookings are for more than 28 days), travel close to home (40% of rentals are less than 500 km from the point of origin) and more often in the countryside (+40 % in 2019).

“New flexibility” thanks to telecommuting “revolutionized the way we travel,” notes the company.

“Millions of people can travel more often, for longer, to more places,” he added.
