Inflation plunged to 3% in April, from 4.6% in March, ELSTAT announced, with inflation “catching” its lowest rate in the last 18 months. As far as food inflation is concerned, in April it moved to plus 11.4%.

From the comparison of the General CPI of the month of April 2023 with the corresponding one of April 2022, there was a 3% increase compared to a 10.2% increase noted during the corresponding comparison of the year 2022 with 2021.

According to ELSTAT, the increase in inflation by 3% in the month of April 2023, compared to the corresponding Index of April 2022, came mainly from the increases in the following categories:

  • 11.4% in the group Food and non-alcoholic beverages, due to price increases mainly in: bread and cereals, meats (general), fish (general), dairy and eggs, oils and fats, vegetables (general), sugar-chocolates- sweet ice creams, other foods, coffee-cocoa-tea, mineral water-soft drinks-fruit juices.
  • 10.9% in the group Durable goods-Household goods and services, due to price increases mainly in: furniture and decorative goods, household appliances and repairs, glassware-tableware and houseware, household goods of immediate consumption, household services.
  • 8.5% in the Hotels-Cafes-Restaurants group, mainly due to price increases in: restaurants-patisseries-cafes-canteens, hotels-motels-inns.
  • 6.5% in the Health group, mainly due to price increases in: pharmaceutical products, medical products, medical, dental and paramedical services, hospital care.
  • 6.4% in the Other goods and services group, due mainly to price increases in: hair salons and personal care stores, other personal care items, health insurance premiums, vehicle insurance premiums.
  • 5.6% in the Clothing and Footwear group, due to price increases in clothing and footwear.
  • 4.0% in the group Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, due mainly to an increase in prices of alcoholic beverages (not served).
  • 3.7% in the Leisure-Cultural activities group, due mainly to price increases in: leisure and cultural durables, small leisure items-flowers-pets, cinemas-theatres, stationery and design materials, package holidays.
  • 2.2% in the Education group, mainly due to price increases in: primary education fees, secondary education fees.
  • 1.4% in the Transportation group, mainly due to price increases in: new cars, used cars, mopeds-motorcycles, car parts and accessories, maintenance and repair of personal transport equipment, taxi passenger tickets, air passenger tickets, tickets passenger transport by ship. Part of this increase was compensated by the decrease mainly in fuel and lubricant prices.
