A day after inflation measured by the IPCA (National Broad Consumer Price Index) registered a variation of 10.06% in 12 months, President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) credited the rise in prices to social distancing policies defended by governors. and a global phenomenon.
Asked in a virtual interview about the impacts of inflation on his reelection campaign, the president also compared the indexes with the end of the Dilma Rousseff (PT) government — in 2015, the accumulated index reached 10.67%.
“Look, if I’m not mistaken, in 2014 or 2015 inflation was 10% as well. Tell me which crisis happened in those two years? There was no crisis. We had the Covid issue here”, declared Bolsonaro.
“With the stay-at-home policy, the production chain suffered bumps and inflation is a natural issue,” he added.
He then stated that the increase in prices of items such as fuel has occurred “all over the world”.
“Or does someone think I’m the bad guy? The price of gasoline and diesel was increased yesterday because I’m the bad guy. First, I have no control over it. I’ve said a few times that if I could, I’d get rid of Petrobras”, stated.
“The price of fuel has increased all over the world”.
On Tuesday (11), Petrobras reported a new increase in diesel prices at refineries (8%), while gasoline sold to distributors had an average increase of 4.85%.
In an open letter released on Tuesday, the president of the BC (Central Bank), Roberto Campos Neto, attributed the overflow of the inflation target in 2021 to successive cost shocks and emphasized that this is a movement observed in other countries as well.
“In fact, the significant acceleration of inflation in 2021 to levels above the targets was a global phenomenon, affecting most advanced and emerging countries,” said the text, addressed to the Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes.
The day before, in a conversation with supporters in front of PalĂ¡cio da Alvorada, Bolsonaro had already blamed inflation on the restrictive measures adopted last year due to Covid.
“Now we have problems. Economic, inflation, the whole world has this problem. Remember the ‘stay at home, the economy, we’ll see later?’ They are watching the economy. He stayed at home, supported, now he wants to blame me for inflation”, he said.
