A survey by PwC consultancy with Brazilian retail executives indicates that 66% of them see the country’s macroeconomic instability as the main threat to their companies in 2022. Among executives from all sectors, concern about the economy in the election year is also the main one ( 69%).
For executives in the sector, the instability of the economy could reduce the company’s ability to sell (81%) and develop products (42%), in addition to making it difficult to seek to raise capital (39%), attract and retain talent (39% ) and innovate (39%).
Cyber risks are the second biggest threat to business according to consumer industry entrepreneurs surveyed (47%), followed by climate change (39%), social inequality (34%), health risks (26%) and geopolitical conflicts ( 16%).
The 25th edition of the CEO Survey surveyed 4,446 executives, of which 154 are Brazilians and 38 from the retail sector, between October and November. About 66% of the organizations represented are privately held, and the majority (56%) have revenue greater than US$100 million.
Despite fears about the country’s instability in 2022, 63% of retail executives said they expect an acceleration in the country’s growth this year, compared to 11% who expect stability in growth and 26% who anticipate a slowdown in the economy.
About 68% of respondents also declared themselves “extremely or very confident” that their revenue will increase in the next 12 months, and 74% that the same will happen in the next three years.
For Carlos Coutinho, a partner at PwC, the positive outlook is a reflection of the lessons learned in the first two years of the pandemic. “Now, they look back and see that economic growth in 2021 was below expectations, but companies are more prepared to face the crisis, and the scenario [da pandemia] is another, with vaccination”, he says.
The greatest optimism is in global growth: 82% of executives in the area predict growth in the world economy and only 13% are betting on a slowdown in economies.
