Epic Games invests in Spire Animation and targets metaverse

by

Los Angeles-based Spire Animation said on Tuesday it has raised $20 million in an investment that included Fortnite maker Epic Games to collaborate on initiatives to the metaverse.

Spire said Epic’s three-dimensional creation tool Unreal Engine will integrate with the company’s feature animation business to build metaverse-centric experiences.

The metaverse has been gaining more and more strength in Silicon Valley, with companies changing focus and businesses to gain space in the segment. Tech giants like Meta, which owns Facebook, are betting that the metaverse will be a big revenue generator.

In January of this year, Microsoft announced the purchase of Activision Blizzard, maker of “Call of Duty”, marking the biggest acquisition in the gaming sector and boosting the industry’s bet on the metaverse.

Resources from Epic and investor Connect Ventures will be set aside to expand the team, build new infrastructure and improve the technology, Spire Animation said.

Founded by “Ratatouille” and “How to Train Your Dragon” producer Brad Lewis, the company is currently producing “Trouble” and “Century Goddess.”
