Panel SA: Marijuana Remedy Expands Market with Elderly Patients

by

The Brazilian medical marijuana market has diversified the profile of its consumers in recent years, according to BRCann, an association that brings together companies in the sector.

According to Tarso Araujo, director of the entity, the market was previously very concentrated on indications for epilepsy, a disease with prevalence in the younger population, and the indications came mainly from neurologists.

In 2015, when this demand began to be met in Brazil, children up to ten years old represented 50% of total import orders. Their participation dropped to something around 20% while patients over 65 years old rose from 7% to a level close to 24%.

As the market matured, the product began to have more prescriptions for psychiatric treatments and pain control, expanding the age range of patients.

Araujo says that the companies’ investments in medical education have also encouraged doctors in new clinical specialties to consider cannabis-based products as a therapeutic alternative for their patients.
