Expenditures and personnel in Research and Development activities increased, according to preliminary data for 2022 published by the National Documentation Center as the competent national Authority of the Hellenic Statistical System for European Research, Development and Innovation statistics.

In more detail, in 2022 the expenses incurred for research and development in Greece were 3,084.82 million euros, increased by 16.6% compared to 2021.

Thus, the percentage of expenditure on research and development in Greece stands at 1.49% of GDP from 1.46% in 2021.

At the European level, Greece is in 14th place among the countries of the European Union.

The business sector continues to be the largest contributor to total research and development spending, showing an increase of 21.6% compared to 2021. This is followed by the higher education sector, which saw spending increase by 13.9% compared to 2021. In the government sector, research and development spending increased by 9.7% compared to 2021. Finally, in the private non-profit sector, total research and development spending in 2022 was increased by 13.4% compared to 2021.

In terms of employment, the number of Full Employment Equivalents (FTEs), which yield full-time positions, increased by 9.9% for total staff in research and development and by 10.2% for researchers compared to 2021.

Specifically, the total staff in 2022 amounts to 67,813 full-time positions and researchers to 49,960 positions.

The largest increase is recorded in the business sector.

In this area, Greece ranks 13th among the EU countries.
