Tesla recalls 817,000 U.S. vehicles for seat belt warning

by

Tesla is recalling more than 817,000 vehicles in the United States because an audible alert may not go off when a vehicle starts and the driver has not fastened their seat belt, an automotive safety regulator said.

The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) said on Thursday that the 2021-22 Model S and Model X, 2017-22 Model 3 and 2020-22 Model Y vehicles do not meet a federal safety standard because the bell is not activated. Tesla will do a software update to resolve the issue.

Tesla told NHTSA that as of January 31 it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the issue.

Tesla said a software error may be preventing the audible signal from activating when the vehicle starts in certain circumstances.

The automaker said the problem only occurs on specific occasions where the beeper is interrupted in the previous driving cycle and the seat belt has not been buckled properly after the interruption.

The company is under increasing scrutiny from US regulators.

Company will recall vehicles that may not stop at traffic lights

Tesla will have to make another recall in the country, which involves 53,822 vehicles, to correct problems that could cause some models not to stop completely at some intersections that pose a safety risk.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said the recall covers some 2016-22 Model S and Model X, 2017-22 Model 3 and 2020-2022 Model Y vehicles. The agency said the feature, also known as FSD Beta, could allow vehicles to pass through a traffic light without first stopping. The company will make a software update that disables the “rolling stop” functionality, NHTSA said.
