For 177 of the 365 days of the year we worked in 2023 in order to pay taxes and contributions to the state. Hence, Tax Freedom Day came on June 28, which is seven days earlier compared to 2022.

For the ninth consecutive year, the Center for Liberal Studies presents in Greece the study on Tax Freedom Day, which is the day on which Greek taxpayers are freed from the burden of taxes, if with the money they earn from their work, they should , before meeting their own needs, to first repay their obligations to the state.

In detail, last year’s updated figures ended up moving Tax Freedom Day 6 days later than originally calculated (to 177 days instead of 171). This correction is mainly due to the tax overperformance of 2023, which, however, is not due to the imposition of new taxes, the Center clarifies.

The main reason for the fact that last year we worked fewer days for the state compared to the year before, is the abolition of the solidarity tax from 1/1/2023. However, if the General Government deficit for 2023 is included, which, according to the Centre, represents future taxes, working days for the state in 2023 were 187, again 7 days less than in 2022.

Additionally, tax and levy revenues are up 1.9% as a percentage of Net National Income, compared to the Stability Program forecast (April 2023), resulting in an estimated 6-day increase in the tax burden of work for the state in relation to the initial calculation of Tax Freedom Day.

Commenting on this year’s accounting results, the executive director of the Center for Liberal Studies, Nikos Rompapas, said: “The fact that in 2023 we worked 7 days less than in 2022 to pay taxes and contributions to the state is a positive development. It is also positive that the overperformance of the state’s tax revenues is not due to the imposition of new taxes.”

And N. Rompapas added: “The important thing now is that the reduction of the tax burden of Greek men and women continues, with the first step for the Government to utilize this recorded overperformance in this direction in the planning and implementation of the fiscal policy for the 2024”.
