President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) said this Friday (11) that the readjustment for police officers could be delayed until 2023, if there is no understanding with the other servers.
The federal government has set aside R$ 1.7 billion in this year’s Budget to grant increases for federal police, federal highway workers and prison guards.
The measure, however, was widely criticized by the rest of the civil service, most of whom have not received a raise since 2017.
Police officers are part of the president’s electoral base, which is behind Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in the polls.
“If there is an understanding on the part of the other civil servants, some threaten to strike, etc., we intend to grant this recomposition to the federal police, federal highways and prison officers. If there is no understanding, we regret it and leave it for next year” , said Bolsonaro, in an interview with TV Brasil.
The president acknowledged that there was a “controversy” about the increase, and said that there was a “general outcry”.
Congress, when voting on the 2022 Budget in December last year, even removed the readjustment forecast for police officers.
However, after articulation by the president himself, the measure returned to the text.
Since then, public servants of different categories have threatened to strike. At the end of last year, the possibility of a readjustment led to a stampede at the Internal Revenue Service — more than 300 tax auditors handed over management positions.
If it turns out that there will be no increase for police officers this year, the president will have to deal, however, with the discontent of the category. The Panel showed in early January that they spoke of “betrayal” if the president backed down from the promised measure.
Government members began to take it for granted that there will be no readjustment this year for any category. Although the benefit was for a considerable portion of the president’s electorate, he was advised by allies to put aside the measure, given the potential to become a “shot in the foot”.
Recently, Bolsonaro had said that the salary readjustment only for federal police officers, federal highway workers and penitentiary agents could be guaranteed this year, and that of the other servers would be for next year.
“We can do justice with three categories. It won’t do justice with the others, I know that. There’s that old question for everyone: are we going to save three categories or will everyone suffer this year?”, he told Jovem Pan.
The government leader in the Chamber, Ricardo Barros (PP-PR), has argued that, to contain the strike movement, no federal public servant will have a salary readjustment in 2022.
In the deputy’s assessment, the solution to contain the pressure is for Bolsonaro to back off from the promise made to the police, and that the salaries of all federal servants will not be readjusted this year. “Don’t give anything to anyone”, defended Barros to leaf.
The signal of readjustment for the category worried governors a lot, as shown by the Panel. They feared a ripple effect in categories that also top the state’s public service.
“This signal is very bad at a time when states are also under pressure and are struggling to restore inflation or, at most, make historical corrections for the categories that earn less”, says the president of the National Council of State Secretaries. of Administration, Fabricio Marques.
