CNBC will be launched in Brazil by CNN founder; find out details

Brazil will gain its sixth news channel in the coming months. This is the Brazilian version of CNBC, NBC’s news channel, one of the main open channels in the United States. The owner will be Douglas Tavolaro, former owner of CNN Brasil and former director of journalism at Record.

Tavolaro confirmed the launch this Tuesday (5). Journalism will be its main attraction, but CNBC does not intend to be an information-only channel. There will be attractions covering politics, sports, lifestyle, entertainment programs and reality shows.

We will combine the strength and quality of the world leader in the field with the experience and talent of Brazilians to offer a new information option to Brazil”, says Douglas Tavolaro.

CNBC will be part of the Times Brasil company, which will be run by Tavolaro and will make other investments. At CNBC, Tavolaro will have as a partner in the investment fund the company Attention Economics, specialized in international media ventures.

The company is represented by Gregory Beitchman, who served as Senior Vice President Commercial for WarnerMedia and CNN International, and as global commercial leader for Thomson Reuters.

Beitchman has been instrumental in launching more than a dozen new media companies around the world. He has implemented licensed operations for Bloomberg in Eastern Europe and for CNN in Japan, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Indonesia, the Philippines, Turkey, Greece, India and Africa.

In the deal, Tavolaro will have 85% of the shares, while Attention will have 15%. The launch date of the new station will be defined in the coming months.

In the coming days, the company will begin several activities to set up infrastructure, define headquarters, brand identity and content, in addition to recruiting and training journalists and production teams throughout Brazil.

The idea is for the headquarters to be in São Paulo. In capitals such as Rio de Janeiro and Brasília, there will be specific offices to cover issues such as politics and entertainment.

Another five specialized news channels currently exist: GloboNews, CNN Brasil, Jovem Pan, Band News and Record News (the latter on open TV).

NBC (an acronym for National Broadcasting Company) is an American commercial television and radio network that is the flagship property of NBCUniversal, a subsidiary of Comcast. In Brazil, the company is a partner of Globo on the Universal Channel, which shows the company’s films and series.
