The turnover for the country’s retail businesses, with an obligation to keep double-entry books and for which data are available on a monthly basis, amounted to 3.32 billion euros in January this year, marking an increase of 10.3% compared to January 2023 which had been formed at 3.01 billion euros and a decrease of 18.4% compared to December 2023 which had been formed at 4.07 billion euros.

Also based on ELSTAT data, the five sectors with the largest participation in the annual turnover in 2023 are:

  • Retail trade in non-specialized stores selling mainly food, beverages or tobacco (26.8%).
  • Retail trade of motor fuels in specialized stores (11.7%).
  • Sale of cars and light motor vehicles (11.6%).
  • Pharmaceutical items in specialized stores (6.6%).
  • Retail trade of clothing in specialized stores (5.1%)

For businesses with an obligation to keep double-entry books and for which data is available on a monthly basis, the activities that showed the largest increase in turnover in January 2024 compared to January 2023 are:

  • Sale of other motor vehicles (26.8%)
  • Retail trade of watches and jewelery in specialized stores (21.5%)

On the contrary, the activities that showed the biggest decrease in turnover are:

  • Retail trade of electrical household appliances in specialized stores (18.2%)
  • Retail trade of audio and video equipment in specialized stores (12.8%)

The regions that showed the largest increase in turnover in January 2024 compared to January 2023 are:

  • Region of Attica (10.6%)
  • Region of Western Greece (10.3%)

For businesses in the retail trade, excluding the vehicle, food and fuel sectors, with the obligation to keep double-entry books and for which data are available on a monthly basis, the turnover in January 2024 amounted to 0.87 billion euros, marking an increase of 4 .8% compared to January 2023 which had been formed at 0.83 billion euros and a decrease of 34.1% compared to December 2023 which had been formed at 1.32 billion euros.

The regions that showed the greatest increase in turnover are:

  • Region of Central Greece (7.1%)
  • Region of Central Macedonia (6.7%)

The region that showed a decrease in turnover is that of Western Greece (1.4%)

For small and medium enterprises of the retail trade with the obligation to keep bigraphic books and for which data are available on a monthly basis, the turnover in January 2024 amounted to 1.13 billion euros, marking an increase of 11.5% compared to January 2023 which was formed in 1.01 billion euros.

For small and medium-sized enterprises, excluding the vehicle, food and fuel sectors, with an obligation to keep double-entry books and for which data are available on a monthly basis, the turnover in January 2024 amounted to 0.43 billion euros, marking an increase of 8.5 % compared to January 2023, which was set at 0.40 billion euros.
