Optimism for this year’s course of tourism is created by the data announced by the Bank of Greece for the first month of the year, where both are recorded increase in travel traffic as well as travel receipts.

In particular, the inbound travel traffic in January it amounted to 737.3 thousand travelers, increased by 16.0% compared to the corresponding month of 2023. Travel traffic through airports increased by 11.7% compared to January 2023 and this through road border stations by 24.8%. The increase in inbound travel traffic came from both the rise in travel traffic from EU-27 countries by 24.9% as well as from countries outside the EU-27 by 8.3%. In more detail, the travel traffic from the countries of the euro zone amounted to 254.7 thousand travelers, increased by 21.2%, while the travel traffic from the EU-27 countries outside the euro zone also showed an increase by 34, 4%, to 112.8 thousand travelers. In particular, travel traffic from Germany showed an increase of 8.6% and reached 70.2 thousand travelers, while that from France increased by 35.4% and reached 42.6 thousand travelers. Regarding countries outside the EU-27, UK travel down 39.2% and was formed at 36.2 thousand travelers, while that from the USA was formed at 54.6 thousand travelers, increased by 260.2%. There was no travel traffic from Russia.

Travel balance

As for the travel balance based on the provisional data of the Bank of Greece, it showed a surplus of 112.6 million euros for Januaryagainst a surplus of 54.6 million euros in the corresponding month of 2023.

Net receipts from the provision of travel services offset the deficit in the goods balance by 4.2% and contributed 25.8% to the total net receipts from services.

27% increase in travel receipts

According to the Bank of Greece, for the first month of the year travel receipts registered a 27.1% increase and amounted to 278.3 billion euros, compared to 219.0 billion euros in the corresponding month of 2023, while an increase of 0.7% was also observed in travel payments (January 2024: 165.7 million euros, January 2023: 164 .4 million euros).

The increase in travel receipts is attributable both in the 16.0% increase in inbound travel traffic and the average spend per trip, which increased by 9.7%.

34.7% increase from Germany, 83% higher than France

Collections from residents of the EU-27 countries showed an increase of 63.3%, which amounted to 149.0 million euros, while receipts from non-EU-27 residents increased by 1.0% (January 2024: €126.5 million, January 2023: €125.2 million). The rise in receipts from residents of the EU-27 countries was the result of a 49.6% increase in receipts from residents of the euro area countries (January 2024: €115.5 million, January 2023: €77.2 million). euros), as well as the increase in receipts from residents of EU-27 countries outside the euro zone by 138.8%, to 33.5 million euros. In particular, with regard to the most important countries of origin of travelers from the euro area, receipts from Germany increased by 34.7% to €29.0 million, while receipts from France increased by 83.0% to €29.0 million to 20.0 million euros. From countries outside the EU-27, receipts from the United Kingdom rose by 8.1% to €20.0 million, as well as receipts from the USA, which increased by 63.6% and amounted to 23.1 million euros.
