The collapse of the bridge led to the closure of the busy Port of Baltimore after it was the only access point over the waters of the Patapsco River
The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore is a “major disaster” for the economy, as it threatens to disrupt the $80 billion worth of freight that moves through the city’s port, one of America’s largest, at the same time. it also threatens more than 140,000 jobs, according to expert estimates.
The bridge, which collapsed after the Dali ferry crashed into its pier, reached the entrance to the Port of Baltimore, the busiest port in the US for auto exports and the ninth busiest port overall.
US officials have announced that sea traffic through the port – which handled more than 47 million tonnes of cargo last year – is being suspended “until further notice”.
Speaking to the BBC, Marco Forgione, director-general of the Institute of Exports and International Trade, which represents British businesses involved in international trade, said the port shutdown would have a “significant impact on global supply chains”.
“More than 750,000 cars and vehicles passed through Baltimore in the last year,” he said.
“These are big American, British and European brands, from General Motors and Ford to Nissan, Fiat and Audi. Additionally, Baltimore is a major exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and this has implications. About half a million tons of LNG leave Baltimore every month, so the consequences of what happened are significant and will have knock-on effects,” he explained.
The Port of Baltimore is directly responsible for approximately 15,000 jobs and supports another approximately 140,000 jobs.
