Food prices rose all over the world Aprilfor the second month in a row, due to the rise in the price of meat, dairy products and grains, according to the report of Organization of the United Nations for Food and Agriculture (FAO).

The food price index calculated by the FAO, tracking the evolution of the prices of a “basket” of basic products, increased by 0.3% compared to March, reaching 119.1 points. The index declined steadily from August to February. However, on an annual basis, prices have fallen by 9.6% compared to the same period in 2023.

In April, the price of meat recorded the largest increase (+1.6%) worldwide. The price of poultry increased on the one hand due to the significant imports from its countries Middle East but also due to the reduction in production linked to bird flu. On the contrary, the price of pork fell, due to reduced demand in Western Europe and China.

The price of grain rose 0.3%, attributed to unfavorable weather conditions for the next crop in some EU countries, Russia and the US. The price of oils showed the same increase, while, on the contrary, from the basic products, sugar showed a significant decrease (-4.4%) since an increase in production is expected in India, Thailand and Brazil.

The price of dairy fell 0.3% overall, even as the price of butter rose steadily, as stocks in Western Europe fell.
