Commodity Shuttle: Paraná is experiencing its worst crisis, and soybean productivity is the lowest in 30 years

by

The people of Paraná have not experienced such an acute crisis in agriculture for a long time. After the crop failure of safrinha corn last year, Paraná is expected to have the worst soybean productivity in 30 years.

In this crop, which was affected by strong heat and lack of rain in the crops, the oilseed will yield only 2,062 kg per hectare, according to data from Deral (Department of Rural Economy).

This data is still provisional and refers to the first harvest, but it already indicates the lowest volume since the 1,900 kg of 1992, a period in which the state still did not have all the current production technology.

Deral’s historical data consider the average yield of the first and second crops. The latter, however, is of lesser importance. In the 2019/20 crop, productivity reached 3,794 kg.

The drop in productivity is expected to reduce the state’s total production to 11.6 million tonnes in the first harvest, the lowest volume since 2012, when a severe drought brought production down to 10.9 million tonnes.

This year’s volume is far from that of 2019/20, when the state reached 20.8 million tons of soybeans.

Corn production drops to 2.76 million tons, 11% less than in the previous harvest. This fall complicates the supply of cereal in the state, which is one of the main producers of protein.

Corn productivity, after reaching 8,372 kg in the last crop, drops to 6,367 in this one. Estimates for the second corn crop are 15.5 million tons, 171% above the previous year, affected by drought and frost.

Back The European Union has returned to import more chicken meat from Brazil. Last year, there were 251.1 thousand tons, 10.3% more than in the previous period, according to data from the bloc’s economic department.

back 2 Thailand, which came to occupy Brazil’s position in the leadership of exports to EU countries, exported only 130.2 thousand tons last year.

Recovery In fall since September last year, the price of milk paid to the producer rose again. The product captured in January, with payment in February, reached R$ 2.1397 per liter, on average in Brazil, up 1.4%, according to Cepea (Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics).

recovery 2 The reduction was due to the weakening of dairy consumption. The fall in the field and the increase in production costs reduced supply, allowing prices to rise again.

Ethanol The production of corn alcohol totaled 157 million liters in the first half of this month, 39% more than in the same period last year, according to Unica (Union of the Sugarcane Industry).
