Japan will impose sanctions on Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko and the Central Bank of Russia, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced on Monday.
“Given the apparent involvement of Belarus in this aggression, we will adopt sanctions against the president [bielorrusso, Alexander] Lukashenko, and against other individuals and organizations, as well as measures to limit exports,” Kishida said after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
He added that, in line with international measures against Russia, “we have decided to impose sanctions to limit transactions with the Russian Central Bank”.
These announcements are in line with pressure from the G7 – a group of the world’s most advanced economies, of which Japan is a part – to Russia for the invasion of Ukraine. The group’s measures include sanctions on Moscow’s financial institutions and on semiconductor sales to Russia.
In addition to the $100 million in loans promised by Japan to Ukraine, Kishida offered another $100 million for emergency humanitarian aid to Kiev.
The Japanese prime minister also said that measures will be taken to allow Ukrainians who are in Japan to remain in the archipelago if they are afraid to return to their country.
In a tweet, Zelensky thanked him for the “tough sanctions” and said that “a true global anti-war coalition works”.
