Economic sanctions were the West’s way of trying to change Russia’s mind about the war. The announcement of measures such as the exclusion of Russian banks from the Swift international financial transfer system and the freezing of part of Russian reserves held abroad is being called an economic war.
Millions of Russians are feeling the effects of sanctions. Because of their impact on the ruble, the Central Bank more than doubled its interest rate to 20%. The Moscow Stock Exchange was closed amid fears of a mass sale of shares.
The economic war puts pressure on the price of commodities such as oil, natural gas, wheat and corn, and food inflation is expected to pick up again – including in Brazil.
In this Wednesday’s episode (2), Café da Manhã listens to the columnist of sheet Vinicius Torres Freire on the ongoing financial offensive. He talks about the impact of sanctions on the Russian economy and how this crisis could affect other countries, such as Brazil.
