Brazil’s GDP falls again in the ranking of the largest economies; see list

by

Although it grew 4.6% in 2021, the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) do Brasil lost a position in the ranking of the largest economies in the world, falling from 12th to 13th place.

The conclusion is from a survey produced by the risk rating agency Austin Rating, which takes into account the GDP of countries measured in current values, in dollars. Last year, the Brazilian indicator was estimated at US$ 1.608 trillion.

According to Austin Rating’s chief economist, Alex Agostini, the devaluation of the real against the dollar weighed on Brazil having lost a position in the ranking, even with the growth of the economy in 2021. Thus, the local GDP was surpassed by Australia (US $1.613 trillion), which was in 14th place.

In 2020, the initial year of the pandemic, the Brazilian economy had already fallen in the ranking, leaving the top 10 positions. At the time, the national GDP dropped from 9th to 12th.

In Agostini’s view, the scenario for Brazil is not very encouraging.

“We have domestic problems. We look ahead and do not envision a better future. We have low incomes, still high unemployment and a large income gap. We cannot put planning into practice, bumping into the political part”, he evaluates.

Austin’s ranking is centered on GDP values in dollars, and does not cover indicators such as purchasing power parity, a metric that compares economic productivity and living standards in different locations.
