The Minister of Finance is going to Brussels Christos Staikourasin order to attend its meetings Eurogroup and his Ecofin tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, respectively.
At the same time, on the sidelines of the meetings, the Greek minister will have a private meeting with the European Commissioner for Finance Paolo Gentiloni and lunch with him president of Eurogroup, Pascal Donahue.
He will then join meeting of Eurogroup where the coordination of the fiscal policy of the eurozone for 2023 will be discussed, with the aim of ensuring the economic recovery. At the same time, the Eurogroup will examine the financial situation shaped by its military offensive Russia against Of Ukraine and other key macroeconomic developments affecting fiscal planning for the coming year. Also, the eurozone finance ministers will discuss the 13th Enhanced Surveillance Report for Greece, which was successfully completed about three weeks ago.
A meeting will follow Eurogroup in an enlarged composition, which will consider the next steps in order to agree on a work program for all the outstanding elements of the banking union, in view of the Summit of 24-25 March on the euro.
The day after tomorrow, Mr. Staikouras will attend its meeting Ecofin, in which, according to the agenda, the European Union finance ministers will discuss – over breakfast – the economic and budgetary implications of the sanctions imposed on Russia following the military offensive against Ukraine. In addition, they will discuss the carbon frontier adjustment mechanism and try to arrive at a general approach to the proposal.
THE agenda The meeting also includes a policy debate on the proposal to transpose into the European Union the global agreement reached at OECD level, according to which large multinational companies will be subject to a minimum tax rate of 15% worldwide.
For its part, the European Commission will present its fiscal guidelines for 2023, which will assist Member States in drawing up their relevant stability and convergence programs to be submitted in April. Following the public consultation and discussions in the relevant committee with the Member States, the European Commission will provide information on the progress of the work on the review of economic governance. In addition, ministers will set the Council’s priorities for the European Union’s 2023 budget.
Finally, conclusions on export credits and the implementation of the VAT package for e-commerce are expected to be adopted, with the Presidency briefing ministers on the main results of the informal European Council Summit held last Thursday and Friday in Versailles.
