“Boosted by recent investment grade upgrades, with strong systemic banks and €70 billion in EU funding, Greece has a historic opportunity for a brighter and greener future.”

With these words, Ms. Penelope Lazaridou, Authorized Advisor, Executive Member and General Manager of Financial Services of GEK TERNA Group, described the new investment landscape that is taking shape for our country, speaking at the recent Capital Link conference in New York.

At the same time, Ms. Lazaridou noted that “in the future, Greece’s infrastructure priorities will continue to include transport projects, but they will certainly be more diversified and multidimensional in response to the environmental and climate challenges of our time”. He made special mention of the fact that Greece is aligning its infrastructure with the climate change management strategy. Specifically, within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, 6.3 billion euros have been allocated to green transition projects, the most important of which concern:

€2.5 billion water management projects, with investments to deal with flooding, control and modernize irrigation as well as water treatment facilities to ensure sustainable resources for agriculture and households.
Waste management projects estimated at €2.5 billion, with sophisticated treatment facilities aimed at reducing reliance on landfill and boosting landfill and recycling rates.
Advanced desalination plants that are also aligned with protecting the environment and promoting sustainability.
Upgrading the Greek rail network that will enhance national connectivity and help reduce the environmental impact of transport.
“GEK TERNA’s portfolio includes projects worth 10 billion. euros, which are fully harmonized with environmental requirements, prioritizing climate-friendly and energy-innovative projects such as Amfilochia, the largest pumped-storage energy storage project – recognized as such by the EU – a public utility project. Water, waste management and irrigation projects that also highlight the shift towards an environmentally friendly infrastructure strategy. Even the traditional transport projects such as the emblematic Egnatia Road, the critical for the local community the Northern Road Axis of Crete and the economically extroverted new International Airport of Heraklion in Kastelli, are being built and mainly will operate based on the strictest European environmental standards. These initiatives reflect our shared vision for a more environmentally sensitive infrastructure agenda, addressing the challenges of climate change and paving the way for a more sustainable tomorrow. Once again, the GEK TERNA group does what it says, since it is already positioned to be the spearhead for changing the infrastructure strategy in the country”, concluded Ms. Lazaridou, clearly marking the strategic priorities of the GEK TERNA Group.
