Government package in election year
President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) announced this Thursday a broad package of measures to release more than BRL 150 billion in resources to workers and retirees in an election year.
The measures:
- FGTS Withdrawal: workers with active accounts will be able to withdraw up to BRL 1,000 from April 20th (see calendar here). Brazilians benefited: 40 million. Resource Expectation: BRL 30 billion.
- Anticipation of the 13th of the INSS: retirees and pensioners will receive the money in April and May, rather than at the end of the year, as is often the case. Brazilians benefited: 30.5 million. Resource Expectation: BRL 56.7 billion.
- Consignment expansion: the margin for credit guaranteed by salaries or benefits will increase from 35% to 40%. Beneficiaries of AuxÃlio Brasil and BPC also enter the game. Brazilians benefited: 52.8 million. Resource Expectation: BRL 77 billion.
- Simplified Digital Microcredit: individuals may take up to BRL 1000 borrowed and the MEIs until BRL 3,000. Interest rates are 1.99% per month and 1.95% per month. The payment period is two years.
why it matters: the measures come at a time of high inflation eroding the income of the poorest, and more expensive credit with the rise in the Selic rate.
The initiatives are also another attempt by the president to secure his re-election, reduce his rejection and improve his evaluation as the electoral race approaches.
Opinion: The package is government propaganda, which adds up to a roll of various amounts of money, and does not put R$150 billion in the economy, writes columnist Vinicius Torres Freire.
Netflix will charge ‘borrowed’ accounts
With Disney+ increasingly appearing in the rearview mirror, Netflix has announced trials in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru to charge a fee to subscribers who share their account with people who live in other homes.
Understand: These customers will have to pay an extra fee on the monthly subscription to continue using the service.
- Up to two accounts from other addresses can be added to the profile. The overcharged amounts will be $3 (R$ 15) in Chile and Costa Rica and $2.12 (R$ 10.80) in Peru.
- Netflix said the current no-charge model affects its “ability to invest in quality series and movies for subscribers”.
why it matters: In 2021, the streaming market leader saw Disney+ overtake it in new subscribers for the first time in a quarter.
- Based on last year’s data, Netflix added 222 million of subscribers, but saw its base grow 8.3 million in the last quarter of 2021 and even lowered its forecasts.
- Disney+ had 11.8 million of new users from October to December, reaching 129.8 million of subscribers.
- Amazon’s Prime has more than 200 millions of subscribers, but the package also includes shipping services, music streaming, etc. The company this year increased the price of subscriptions in the US.
Take a break: hackativism
The war between Russia and Ukraine is not just about missiles, cannons, aircraft and tanks. There is also another conflict, much quieter, but with great destructive potential: cyberattacks.
Understand: THE sheet showed this week that Russian attacks in this field have not been that sophisticated — until now. This, however, could be a sign that the worst is yet to come, taking into account the groups that operate in the country with the power to wreak havoc on digital structures.
On the Ukrainian side are famous hacker activism groups such as Anonymous, which attacked Russian entities with data leaks and messages in support of the invaded country on Russian screens.
To know more about hacker activism or hackativism:
- “We Are Legion – We Are Anonymous”: documentary shows what the work is like and what the beliefs of one of the most famous “hackactivism” groups in the world are. Watch for free on the free content platform Libreflix.
- “Mr Robot”: Acclaimed four-season series stars Rami Malek and shows the story of hackers waging a war on corporate culture. Available on Amazon Prime Video
