After Economy Minister Paulo Guedes said this Friday (18) that Paraguay has become “the richest Brazilian state”, the neighboring country’s chancellery reacted by publishing a note that regrets the “unfortunate statements of a senior government official Brazilian”.
During a press conference in Ceará, Guedes said that Paraguay has become a kind of Brazilian state with a low tax burden, in reference to the large number of Brazilians who settle in the country.
According to the minister, this means that business that could be done in Brazil is done in Paraguay.
“Paraguay practically became a Brazilian state with zero tax, it grew, it became rich because it benefits from the Brazilian scale by exporting to Brazil,” he said, according to the newspaper O Globo.
“If we had low taxes, Brazilians wouldn’t be going to Paraguay to make soy, electric whip. Everything that is being done there could be done here and is being done there because we have very high taxes and Paraguay intelligently lowered it.” taxes and became the richest Brazilian state, in quotation marks, the one that grows the most”, said the minister.
In the note published on Twitter, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Paraguay also stated that the country is a free nation and that the statements cannot be ignored.
“Paraguay is and will always be a free, sovereign and independent nation, and in honor of those who defended it heroically throughout its history, these unfortunate statements cannot be ignored,” the ministry’s official profile wrote on Saturday (19).
