The travel balance presented surplus EUR 87.5 million in January 2025, according to data released by the Bank of Greece. At the same time travel receipts increased by 7.5% in January and Incoming travel traffic increased by 11.4%.

Travel balance

According to provisional data, the travel balance in January 2025 showed a surplus of € 87.5 million, compared to a surplus of EUR 115.9 million in 2024. In particular, an increase of 7.5% recorded in January 2025 by € 3025, which was € 3025, which was € 3025. euro in the corresponding month of 2024, while an increase of 30.0% was also observed in travel payments (January 2025: 214.7 million euros, January 2024: 165.1 million euros). The increase in travel receipts is due to the rise of incoming travel traffic by 11.4%, as the average expenditure per journey decreased by 3.5%. Net receipts from the provision of travel services offset the 3.0% deficit of the balance of goods and contributed 34.7% to all net receipts from services.

In January 2025, as mentioned above, travel receipts increased by 7.5% compared to the corresponding month of 2024 and stood at € 302.2 million. More specifically, the receipts decreased by residents of EU countries, which stood at EUR 144.2 million, while revenue from residents of other countries increased by 18.9% (January 2025: 156.0 million euros, January 2024: 131.2 million). The decline in receipts by residents of the EU-27 countries was the result of the reduction of receipts by residents of the euro zone by 50.6% (January 2025: 15.0 million euros, January 2024: 30.3 million euros), as revenue from residents of the countries of the euro (January 20.9% increased by € 20.9%: EUR 129.3 million, January 2024: 117.7 million euros). Specifically, with regard to the most important countries of origin of travelers from the euro area, receipts from Germany increased by 16.2% to EUR 35.5 million, while receipts from France decreased by 47.3% and stood at € 9.8 million. Italy was increased by 17.4%, which stood at € 22.9 million. Of the other countries, 36.4% rose to the United Kingdom, which stood at EUR 25.3 million, as well as US revenue that increased by 20.4% and stood at € 40.9 million. Finally, the receipts from Russia stood at € 1.6 million.

Incoming travel traffic

Inbound travel traffic in January 2025 stood at 821.6 thousand travelers, increased by 11.4% compared to the corresponding month of 2024. In particular, airport travel increased by 24.9% compared to January 2024, while this through 9.7%. The rise of incoming travel movement came from an increase in travel traffic from both EU-27 countries by 3.0% and other countries by 19.8%. More specifically, travel traffic from euro area countries stood at 318.8 thousand travelers, increased by 25.2%, while traveling 47.0% was reduced by EU countries outside the euro area, which was 59.8 mm travelers. In particular, travel from Germany increased by 35.3% and stood at 95.0 thousand travelers, while France decreased by 45.2% and stood at 23.3 thousand travelers. Travel traffic from Italy rose 19.6%, which was 45.8 thousand travelers. Regarding countries outside the EU-27, travel from the United Kingdom increased by 110.7% and stood at 76.2 thousand travelers, while the US stood at 48.5 thousand travelers, down 11.3%. Finally, travel from Russia was 0.6 thousand travelers.
