The Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance Nikos Papathanassis signed the Convention entitled “Study, Construction, Funding, Functioning and Maintenance of Student Homes of the University of Crete, with SDIT”.
In particular, the object of the partnership concerns the Study, funding, construction, maintenance and technical management of student halls of 4,846 beds in Rethymnon (2.710 beds) and Heraklion (2,136 beds), as well as other university buildings, including a new amphitheater at the Rethymnon Campus.
The project budget amounts to EUR 255 million including VAT in terms of net present value, while the total duration of the contract is 30 years (3 years of construction and 27 years of operation).
With the implementation of this project, the University of Crete achieves:
- the modernization, improvement and increase of available infrastructure,
- the improvement and increase of the number of student housing so that the university responds better to its social mission,
- improving infrastructure for sports and cultural activities,
- Increasing the levels of quality, safety and health of students through their stay within the Foundation area,
- Internationalization of the Foundation through the possibility of providing students from third countries,
- Environmental protection and energy saving from the operation and use of spaces through the design of high energy efficiency of the facilities.
The project of the University of Crete is the 25th signed PPP contract and the first PPP PPP project with availability payments, with the total value of contracting PPP projects now at € 2.9 billion.
Nikos Papathanassis said: “The signature of the new PPP project, which relates to the construction and operation of student halls and other facilities at the University of Crete, marks the importance of the government in addressing youth -related problems and housing problems. In addition, this development is an additional tangible proof of the role of public and private partnerships as a lever for the development and improvement of the daily lives of citizens. ”
