Panel SA: Retail executives project poor results and drop in sales

by

Brazilian retail sales are expected to fall in March, according to projections from Ibevar (Brazilian Institute of Retail and Consumer Market Executives).

According to the entity, restricted retail, which includes fuel, food, home appliances and pharmaceuticals, will decline 0.32% this month. For April and May, the trend is for results to fluctuate.

Despite the general decline, the sale of items such as fabrics, clothes and shoes should grow around 10.5% this month compared to February. But for April, the forecast is for a fall of almost 16% in these categories.

Extended retail, which also considers vehicles and construction materials, should register a drop of almost 1.6% compared to February, influenced by the jump in fuel prices.

According to Claudio Felisoni de Angelo, president of Ibevar, the two retail segments have shown a downward trend since the end of 2020.

The forecast, based on income conditions, employment, interest and payment terms, indicates that sales should close the accumulated 12 months in decline – the restricted retail of 2.55% and the extended, 1.44%.

“It’s certainly a pretty bad result, since we’re talking about actual volume billed,” says Angelo.
