Greek MEP Yiannis Maniatis, whom we met in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, spoke about the energy crisis, the housing policy and the growing cost of living.

Referring to the high electricity values in Greece, Mr. Maniatis, which he described as “unreal”. He stressed that the government’s subsidies are inadequate and require deep structural changes, such as upgrading the energy stock market and boosting competition. He emphasized the need to strengthen small and medium -sized enterprises and farmers in order to access energy self -generation and to be detached from the big providers.

Referring to the relatively recent blackout in Spain, he warned that no state is completely protected, but Greece is taking significant prevention measures. He emphasized the need for “base units” that provide a steady power supply, as well as energy storage and modernization of networks.

On the issue of housing, he noted that Greece is in crisis, with sales and rent prices being launched. The main reasons, he said, are the uncontrolled dissemination of Airbnb, the Golden Visa regime and the lack of social policy. He pointed out that in countries such as Portugal, thousands of new houses are built through the recovery fund, while in Greece the renovation of only 100 is planned. He is chairing a new European Parliament Committee for housing, which aims to create common European political and financial tools.

Finally, he referred to the high cost of living, especially the prices of supermarkets, which – as he said – exceed 30% of their respective European. He proposed measures such as the comparison of prices in European cities and the establishment of a powerful single consumer protection body. He condemned the temporary market -type measures and called for substantial structural interventions.
