Kyriakos Pierrakakis, Minister of National Economy and Finance
Good evening you,
I am very pleased to welcome my friend and counterpart in Athens today, Minister of Finance of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Makis Keravnos.
Our current meeting is yet another proof of the excellent level of cooperation and understanding between Greece and Cyprus.
Our relationships are based not only in brotherly and historical ties, but also in our common targeting to deepen our bilateral cooperation and promoting the well -being of our citizens.
The latest geopolitical developments in the Middle East raise reasonable concern. At this crucial moment there is a need to reign self -restraint and de -escalation and to protect the freedom of navigation.
Diplomacy must now have a reason to prevent further destabilization with negative impacts on the global economy, supply chains and commercial shipping, areas that are neuralgic to both Greece and Cyprus.
Despite international uncertainty, the Greek economy records remarkable progress and durability. Growth for the year 2025 is provided by the European Commission at 2.3%, steadily above the European Union average. The Greek government continues its reforms, with the aim of enhancing competitiveness and attracting investment.
With Mr. Keravnos, whom I want to congratulate the excellent performance of the Cypriot economy, we have decided to strengthen our coordination in bilateral and European context, especially in view of the EU Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus in the first half of the 2026.
Greece will actively support the Cypriot Presidency, politically and technically. Our coordination will be a strategic, especially in view of the EU presidency in Greece in the second half of 2027.
As Greece, we want a strong Europe, with less internal obstacles and simpler processes. But most of all, we want a Europe with the development and strategic vision for tomorrow.
So, in the coming period, we have an opportunity, Cyprus and Greece, to give a joint impetus to European issues of common interest, to reduce energy costs, more digitization and innovation, acceleration of green transition and financing large productive investment.
Dear Minister,
Once again I would like to welcome you.
I am sure that the Republic of Cyprus will organize a very successful presidency. And Greece is self -evident that it will assist with a steady orientation to our common values, our visions for a more durable, competitive and dominant European economy.
Makis Keravnos, Minister of Finance of the Republic of Cyprus
Thanks for the hospitality. Thanks for the very productive and useful meeting we had today. Cyprus always feels Greece by her.
Our relationships are particularly close and are constantly improving, through both the partnerships of our Ministries and in European Forums.
I am very pleased that our economies, Greece and Cyprus, are one of the best economies in the European Union.
Through this level of prosperity, we will continue to work together to be able, as governments today, to even improve and improve the prosperity of our peoples – the people of Cyprus and Greece – who deserve it.
We have exchanged views on current issues and geopolitical developments, which of course are concerned. We informed my friend Minister and his associates about the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency.
Thanks for the given support of Greece’s minister in the efforts to be undertaken by the Republic of Cyprus, which is an important – important event for Cyprus – to take over the European Presidency, on the agenda of which there are many important issues and files.
There was also an exchange of views and we discussed various bilateral issues to enhance economic and trade cooperation, and especially in the field of investment. And we are glad that Greek businesses today are making significant investments in Cyprus – both in the banking sector and in the field of technology.
And this, I think, is a very important, mutual, common benefit to our countries and their people. I will not repeat what the minister said, which I certainly agree with.
I would just like to thank again for the very productive debate, for the support, the very good cooperation, and I wish the best for Greece and for Cyprus, Mr Minister.
Thanks.
