One of the main wheat importers in the world, Brazil sets a record in exports and imports less in this first quarter of the year. This comes at a time when cereal is one of the most disputed foods on the market.
Based on data from Anec (National Association of Cereal Exporters), the country will reach a record level of 2.12 million tons exported by March, an increase of 332% compared to 2021.
Imports, based on average daily purchases by Secex (Secretary of Foreign Trade), will reach 1.54 million tons, 10% below 2021.
Adaptation of part of Brazilian wheat to the requirements of some importing countries and a favorable dollar are making Brazilian cereal competitive in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
In the first two months, Secex points to exports of 290 thousand tons to Saudi Arabia and 230 thousand to Morocco. In Asia, the biggest importers of the Brazilian cereal were Indonesia, with 220 thousand tons, and Pakistan, with 138 thousand.
The average value of a ton of unmilled wheat and rye exported by Brazil reached US$ 303 this month, 12.4% above the price a year ago. The imported cereal arrived in the country with an average value of US$ 299, according to Secex.
The price of wheat lost strength in the international market. Falling oil and hopes of a settlement in negotiations between Russia and Ukraine made commodities retreat this Tuesday (29).
Wheat, the product most affected by the war, returned to trading below US$ 10 per bushel (27.2 kg) on Tuesday, but the May contract closed at US$ 10.14, with a 4% drop in end of the auction. Compared to a year ago, wheat maintains a high of 71%.
The day before Ukraine was invaded by Russia, on February 23, the grain was priced at $8.44 a bushel in Chicago. It even traded as low as $12.94 on March 7, then lost strength.
Oil and war continue to make commodity prices very volatile. Soybeans fell 1.3% on Tuesday; and corn, 3%. Only coffee, traded in New York, did not fall, with prices stable.
