Lego bricks, Barbie doll and magic cube are among the top ten toys of all time, according to a classification of the famous British retailer Hamleys, which also includes the game boy and monopoly.
On its 265th birthday, the London toy store, the oldest in the world according to Guinness Book of Records, asked its customers to help compile a list of 100 products that marked the story and transcended generations.
Among the most popular 10 is Lego, a “global, timeless and creative phenomenon” that has inspired movies and amusement parks since 1958.
The Barbie doll, “icon of popular culture”, which has sold over one billion units around the world since its launch in 1959, has also been on the regent street store list.
The top 10 also includes the magic cube, invented in 1974 by Hungarian Erno Rubik, a puzzle that has sold over 500 million units, a record in its category.
Other toys on the Hamleys list also include Tamagotchi, a virtual pet that “symbolizes the 90’s obsession with electronic toys”, the figure of the Action Man and stuffed Teletubbies.
Hamleys also pays tribute to the “timeless classics” of hula hoops, piões and marble sets, which the store has been selling since its inauguration in 1760 and still have been successful to this day.
